SLAB Average Surfer Interviews - Sally Harris

More covid restrictions.. and our ability to surf and mix with each other once again curtailed. We thought we would interview some average surfers, and see how they're doing.

Hey Sally, how ya getting on?

Really good – it’s been a big year for everyone. I have a lot of gratitude for where I am now, safe with a beautiful family & community living by the sea.

How long have ya been shredding the waves of Scotland’s East Coast?

I moved back to the east coast in 2004, as a surfer Mum, having not long given birth to my daughter.

Favorite surf session of the year?

Since I haven’t travelled anywhere this year it has been at the east coast!
To be honest it was absolutely pumping in the last week of November, it was lit up!

You run a great organization called groundswell Scotland, could you tell us a bit more about it?

Thank you. We provide a safe place & programs for women to come and join in sustainable community & surf sisterhood to recover from trauma. We also facilitate community #seaselflove sessions which provide well-being practices such as yoga, groundings intention setting as well as surf coaching.

Amazing. How have things been going this year for Groundswell with Covid?

I’ve gone from working in youth work for 20 years to fully running GroundSwell Scotland as a non-profit. We have had to cancel a few sessions and give people some refunds but generally we are gaining a lot of momentum building community and supporting many people to get into the sea and benefit their mental health.

Great to hear. What motivates you to put a wetsuit on in the middle of winter?

Getting stoked! Finding a reset and the reason for living! I don’t find it that hard going surfing in the winter because the wetsuits are so good these days and we live 5 minutes from the best beaches & reefs so I often get changed at home!

That’s the dream! Good to chat to ya, see you soon.

Get to chat to you as well, always stoked to surf with you.

Cheers Sally!
