The Wave Project
The Wave Project is a charity that we love. We give a portion of our profits to help provide surf therapy courses across the UK to kids for whatever reason, have had a tough time. Volunteers also get 10% off.
I have worked with the wave project since last year, and was immediately blown away by the work they do. Some one could explain how cold water therapy helps mental health and the benefits of mentors to young people. But I know surf therapy works because I have seen it, and I have felt it.
There’s great moments. Kids catching their first wave. Kids paddling out past the break without fear. For some kids getting in the water is a great achievement. But it’s the small moments I have began to notice more. The kid who has decided that they just want to float in the water for a while and relax, to feel the waves wash over them. The kid who was shy to begin with, that comes out with a cheeky comment to make everyone laugh. The calm on the face of a kid as they bob over a wave.
All this is made possible by an amazing group of volunteers. Firefighters, dog walkers, students, school teachers. A weird plethora of characters, giving up their time-off to throw themselves in the north sea and wash pissy wetsuit boots. They’re all heroes. It’s all worth it when you see the cheek to cheek grins on the kids faces.
I don’t know much, but I know this is good.
